MONTGOMERY — The Alabama House of Representatives adjourned on a somber note Tuesday evening after leadership announced the hospitalization of State Rep. Ed Oliver (R-Dadeville) and the declining health of a former member.
At the end of Tuesday’s business, House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville) called on State Rep. Mark Gidley (R-Hokes Bluff) to offer prayer for those affected by the recent storms, as well as health emergencies for Oliver and former State Rep. Alan Harper, of Northport.
“Representative Oliver had to be carried to the hospital this afternoon,” Ledbetter said. “Certainly, our prayers are with him. I understand his vitals are good. They really don’t know what’s going on with him at this moment.”
Ledbetter said that Harper, who retired from the legislature in 2017 after nearly a decade, was “in bad condition,” offering no more detail.
Oliver was on the House floor earlier on Tuesday, without anything apparently wrong. Ledbetter further stated that doctors were still trying to determine what happened.
