After flipping the House District 74 seat blue for the first time since 2002, State Rep. Phillip Ensler (D-Montgomery) announced on Monday that he would not be seeking reelection in 2026.

Ensler took office after defeating Republican incumbent Charlotte Meadows in the 2022 general election.

On Monday, however, Ensler announced that he would not seek to maintain his seat in the 2026 statewide election, stating he was moving to New York City to be closer to family.

"After tremendous consideration, I have decided not to seek reelection to the Alabama State House of Representatives next year," Ensler wrote. Words cannot express how grateful I am for all who have supported me and our work. I thank each of you for your belief in a better Alabama for all. Together, we have advanced solutions to address real issues, including efforts to reduce gun violence, expand mental health services, support public education, and much more."

The state has seen a rash of recent special elections over the past two years, with multiple members leaving due to taking different roles, legal troubles or just moving on. However, Ensler's seat will not be among them since he plans to retire when his term concludes.

"I remain committed to serving District 74 through the end of my term in 2026, and then I plan to return to my native New York City, where I will be closer to family," Ensler continued.

"Since moving to Montgomery in 2012, I have served the community in many ways: as a Teach for America educator at Lee High School, as a civil rights attorney, and as Senior Policy Advisor for the City of Montgomery. Throughout my time in these roles, I developed deep and lasting bonds across our community. These friendships continue to inspire me, and I look forward to sustaining these lifelong relationships."

"No matter where I live, I will always be committed to fighting for a more inclusive, safe, prosperous, and loving world for all."
