State Rep. Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham) announced on Tuesday she was running to be the next mayor of Birmingham.
Birmingham’s mayoral election is scheduled for August 26, 2025. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin is the incumbent.
Givan told Birmingham’s WVTM 13 on Tuesday that the city of Birmingham was “under siege” due to an increasing homicide rate.
"It's the crime, it's the streets, it's the city of Birmingham. Look at the city, the city's filthy," Givan said. "Streets not paved, potholes not filled, trash and debris in some areas - it looks like a war zone."
Givan told the outlet she plans to stay in the legislature while campaigning for the new role.
