State Rep. Matt Woods (R-Jasper) handily won a special election over Ryan Cagle, the Democratic nominee, for a vacant Senate District 5 seat on Tuesday.
The seat became vacant due to former Senate Pro-Tem Greg Reed (R-Jasper) resigning to join Governor Kay Ivey's cabinet in January.
According to the Alabama Secretary of State's Office, Woods won by an 86% to 14% (7,707 votes to 1,238 votes) margin over Cagle. Voter turnout was 8.81%.
Jeannie Burniston, Alabama Republican Party communications director, said, "Congratulations to Senator-elect Matt Woods on tonight's victory. During his time in the House of Representatives, Matt has been a consistent fighter for conservative values and protecting Alabama families."
"From championing the REACH Act, which gives adults another pathway to earn a high school diploma, to passing the Alabama Child Protection Act, which criminalizes the use of AI to generate child pornography—Matt Woods has proven he's serious about getting results. We're excited to see his continued leadership and impact in the Alabama Senate," she added.
