One of the greatest responsibilities of government is providing for the common defense.
As a state legislator, I’ve cast plenty of difficult votes over the years. Every budget requires priorities, tough decisions, and competing interests. But one priority should never be in doubt: giving our military the resources it needs to protect the United States.
Congress should fully fund our national defense. That’s good for our troops, good for our national security, and good for Alabama.
I represent part of Madison County, where national defense isn’t some distant issue debated in Washington. It’s part of our daily lives.
Redstone Arsenal has become one of the most important military installations in America. Huntsville is home to thousands of engineers, scientists, manufacturers, and skilled tradesmen whose work helps ensure our servicemen and women maintain the technological advantage they need to succeed on tomorrow’s battlefield.
One company helping to make that possible is Northrop Grumman. Its Huntsville operations employ thousands of Alabamians working on some of the nation’s most sophisticated defense technologies. These aren’t simply manufacturing jobs. They are careers built around protecting America and giving our military every possible advantage against increasingly capable adversaries.
One of the best examples is the Army’s Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS).
Developed with major contributions from Huntsville, IBCS connects missile defense sensors and interceptors into a single integrated network, allowing commanders to detect, track and defeat threats faster and more effectively than ever before.
That’s exactly the kind of capability America needs.
The wars of the future will look vastly different from those of the past. China continues investing heavily in advanced missile systems. Russia, Iran, and North Korea are expanding their missile and drone capabilities. Our adversaries aren’t slowing down, and neither can we.
Programs like IBCS ensure America’s military stays one step ahead, and the benefits extend well beyond our national security.
IBCS supports approximately 3,400 jobs across Alabama and generates roughly $1 billion in annual economic activity. More broadly, Northrop Grumman’s Alabama operations support more than 16,000 jobs and contribute an estimated $4.6 billion to our state’s economy.
Behind every one of those numbers is an Alabama family. They’re engineers designing innovative technology. They’re machinists building precision components. They’re electricians, software developers, suppliers, small business owners, and veterans who continue serving our country in a different uniform.
A strong and predictable defense budget gives companies the confidence to hire workers, expand facilities, invest in modern technologies, and strengthen the industrial base our military depends upon.
That’s especially important here in Huntsville, where innovation drives both our economy and America’s defense posture.
Fortunately, Congress has demonstrated a clear understanding of these priorities.
Both the House and Senate Armed Services Committees have recognized the importance of continuing investments in next-generation missile defense and modernization programs. They understand that maintaining America’s military superiority requires consistent investment, not uncertainty.
That’s encouraging, because supporting our military shouldn’t be a partisan issue.
Every American benefits from a military that is well-equipped, well-trained, and prepared to meet the challenges of an increasingly dangerous world. Every community benefits when our defense industrial base remains strong. And every service member deserves the confidence that our nation will provide the tools necessary to accomplish the mission.
Alabama has done its part. Our workers continue designing, building and supporting many of the technologies that protect our nation every single day.
Now Congress should finish the job.
A fully funded defense budget is more than an investment in Alabama. It’s an investment in American strength, American security, and the brave men and women who stand ready to defend both.
