State Rep. Rhett Marques (R-Enterprise) reportedly is considering a run in the upcoming Congressional race in Alabama’s first congressional district in an ever-thinning field as the final players settle into their preferred race.
Alabama’s AL-1 is currently held by U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), who took the seat after leaving his incumbent position in AL-2 after a federally mandated redrawing of the state’s congressional lines.
Moore defeated then-AL-1 incumbent Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) for the seat in the 2024 elections cycle.
Now, Moore is speculated to announce his candidacy for the State’s soon-to-be vacant Senate seat any day, following U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville's (R-Auburn) announcement of his gubernatorial bid.
Carl is likewise assumed to enter the race to take back his old seat. Marques would make a total of two Republicans seeking the nomination in the GOP primary. However, no one has made an official announcement.
Marques has served in the Alabama State House since 2018. Sources in Montgomery claim he is seeking the party's nomination for the seat ahead of the 2026 primary. Marques did not immediately respond to 1819 News’ request for a comment.
The Alabama Republican Party recently announced qualifying dates for the 2026 primary. Qualifying opens on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2026.
