This week, State Rep. Ernie Yarbrough (R-Trinity) drafted a House resolution to honor the life of the late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last week while hosting a debate at Utah Valley University.

The resolution, titled "Honoring the Life and Legacy of Charles James Kirk," eulogizes Kirk's life as "a devoted citizen, husband, father, and advocate for civic participation." It also recognized "his unwavering dedication to his beliefs, his commitment to mentoring youth, and his enduring impact on civic life in America."

Resolution reads as follows:

WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that we note the passing of Charles James "Charlie" Kirk, a nationally recognized activist, author, and founder of the organization Turning Point USA, who was tragically assassinated on September 10, 2025, while participating in a public debate at Utah Valley University; and

WHEREAS, born on October 14, 1993, in Arlington Heights, Illinois, Charlie was the son of Kimberly, a mental health counselor, and Robert Kirk, an architect; from a young age, he demonstrated a deep interest in civic life and public discourse, which would shape his future path; and WHEREAS, while attending Wheeling High School, Charlie discovered a passion for public dialogue and civic engagement; he later attended Harper College before dedicating himself full-time to his mission of empowering young Americans; and

WHEREAS, at the age of 19, Charlie Kirk founded Turning Point USA, an organization committed to engaging students in civic education and leadership; under his guidance, it grew into a national movement with over 800 hundred college chapters, encouraging young people to participate in the democratic process and engage in open dialogue; and

WHEREAS, Charlie was known for his tireless travel schedule, speaking at schools and universities across the country where he often engaged with individuals of differing viewpoints; he believed deeply in the importance of respectful debate, free expression, and the power of ideas to shape society; and WHEREAS, though his work often placed him at the center of public attention, Charlie remained committed to peaceful civic engagement and mentorship, inspiring a generation of young leaders to participate in public life; and

WHEREAS, in 2021, Charlie married Erika Frantzve; he was a devoted husband and father to their daughter and son, and he cherished his role as a family man; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Kirk will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his beliefs, his commitment to mentoring youth, and his enduring impact on civic life in America; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we mourn the death of Charles James "Charlie" Kirk, a devoted citizen, husband, father, and advocate for civic participation, and extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched.
