This week's decision by the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) to require student-athletes who transfer to sit out for one year before competing in high school athletics for participating in Alabama's school choice CHOOSE Act has been a head-scratcher, given that it has created friction between the agency and Alabama's executive and legislative branches.
On Friday, a Montgomery County Circuit Court granted injunctive relief to those student-athletes, allowing them to participate in AHSAA-sanctioned athletics immediately.
During an interview that aired on Friday's broadcast of Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5's "The Jeff Poor Show," State Sen. Chris Elliott (R-Josephine) argued the AHSAA was motivated by an "anti-conservative, anti-school choice agenda."
"I think that's exactly what's going on. And I do think it's coupled — don't get me wrong. I think they are very much high and mighty and saying, 'We're not going to listen to them. Let's let you know what to do.' OK, fine. That's the 'find out' portion of this argument, OK? But I think if you dig and you try to figure out what in the world is the motivation here, you got to look, man — this is made up of edu-crats, right?"
"This is made up of public school officials by and large, OK? Certainly run by public school officials who don't like school choice. This is an anti-conservative, anti-school choice driven agenda. And this is how they're trying to undermine it."
