Recently, the mayors of Alabama's biggest cities have made overtures about repealing the state's permitless "constitutional" carry law, which was passed by the legislature in 2022.

The statute allows lawful residents of the state to carry a firearm on their person or vehicle without a permit but has been the target of some of Alabama's most powerful lobbies, including the Alabama Sheriffs Association and at least three of the so-called "Big 10" mayors.

During an appearance on Mobile radio's FM Talk 106.5's "The Jeff Poor Show," State Sen. Chris Elliott (R-Josephine) dismissed the possibility of a repeal by the Republican-led Alabama Legislature in 2025.

"I do not think that's going to happen. As a matter of fact, I'm fairly certain that there is no chance of that happening. And if the Big 10 mayors are thinking that's what they want to make their legislative priority, then they're making a mistake. We've got permitless carry in Alabama. We're going to have permitless carry in Alabama. You know, and that's not going to change. Although, I didn't renew that permit the other day because I traveled to Florida pretty frequently. Got to have that thing for resprocity so just remember that."
