State Sen. Tim Melson (R-Florence) was named the 2024 "Sound Money Legislator of the Year" by Money Metals Exchange and the Sound Money Defense.
Melson championed precious metals bills and led a campaign to end capital gains tax on gold and silver coins, bars and rounds in 2024.
"I'm honored to receive this award," said Melson. "At a time of high inflation and uncertainty, sound money is more relevant than ever. Gold and silver have stood the test of time as reliable stores of value for thousands of years."
In 2018, Melson sponsored a measure removing state sales taxation of precious metals, specifically on gold, silver, platinum and palladium bullion. In 2022, he sponsored a bill to extend the expiration date of the sales tax exemption another five years.
"I'm proud to fight for policies that protect an individual's right to use gold and silver as money," Melson continued. "I will continue advocating for sound money in Alabama, ensuring that we create a more stable economy for everyone."
Melson, a physician, also sponsored bills in the 2024 regular session to protect IFV clinics and to change the makeup of the State Committee of Public Health.
