Alabama Republican Party qualifying for State Senate Districts 25 and 26 closed on Monday with only incumbent State Sen. Will Barfoot (R-Pike Road) qualifying.

Barfoot qualified for District 25. The sole Democrat to qualify for District 25 was Phadra Carson Foster. No Republican qualified for District 26. Incumbent State Sen. Kirk Hatcher (D-Montgomery) was the only Democrat to qualify for District 26.

The special primary election for Senate Districts 25 and 26 will be held on Tuesday, August 11. Governor Kay Ivey called an August 11 special election on Friday for State Senate Districts 25 and 26 after the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision to allow for the use of the 2021 Alabama-drawn State Senate map. However, all candidates for State Senate Districts 25 and 26 are unopposed until the general election in November, when Barfoot and Foster face off.

Barfoot sponsored legislation setting minimum staffing standards for law enforcement in Montgomery during the 2026 session.

“I’m glad the folks have given me another opportunity to be the Republican nominee for District 25. I’m looking forward to a spirited battle until November, and we’ll be able to let the folks know what we’ve done over the last four years,” Barfoot told 1819 News on Monday. “That includes making sure that issues that directly affect Montgomery and the surrounding areas, like crime, that we’re going to continue to talk about that and try to do everything we can to curb that. Give the tools that are necessary and hold people accountable. Also, making sure folks know that we are going to continue to battle against any attempt for an occupational tax.”

Hatcher is unopposed in both the primary and the general election.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals stayed a recent ruling by U.S. District Judge Anna Manasco on Thursday that barred Alabama from using a State Senate map passed by the Legislature in 2021.
