The May 19 primary election will include two statewide amendments.

Statewide Amendment 1 would allow judges to deny bail for shooting or discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling or other occupied space, or for any solicitation, attempt or conspiracy to commit murder.

Under Aniah’s Law, judges may deny bond for a list of offenses, including murder, kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, terrorism, robbery, domestic violence, aggravated child abuse, arson and human trafficking.

The amendment would add to the list of offenses eligible for an Aniah’s Law hearing.

Statewide Amendment 2 would ensure that the pay for any district attorney would not be lowered during his or her term.

District attorneys in Alabama serve six-year terms. The amendment would prohibit a reduction of a DA’s pay for that term.

State Rep. Jim Hill (R-Moody) sponsored the 2025 legislation that led to the amendment. Barfoot sponsored the Senate version of the bill.

The primary election is May 19. Sample ballots are available on the Alabama Secretary of State’s website.
