SSAB, a steel company headquartered in Sweden, announced a $12 million expansion at its Mobile plant.

The expansion will increase production and help the plant retain jobs, said general manager Andy Bramstedt.

"Growing SSAB here in Alabama is a priority for our company," Bramstedt stated. "SSAB Special Steels' strategic objective is to increase QT capacity, and Mobile plays a significant role in achieving this."

The existing furnace at SSAB Alabama will be extended, and shot blast equipment will be upgraded at the plant. The upgrades will increase capacity by approximately 10%.

"SSAB's $12 million investment in enhancing its Mobile operations is a testament to the strength and potential of our local economy," Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood said. "By expanding their production capacity and reinforcing their commitment to our community, SSAB not only enhances its own operations but also contributes significantly to our regional growth and job retention. We are excited to see SSAB's continued success and grateful for their ongoing partnership with Mobile County."

Mobile Chamber president and CEO Bradley Byrne said the capital investment is a good sign for the future of industry in Mobile.

"SSAB's continued investment in our community underscores the importance of supporting both new and existing industries in Mobile County," he said. "Retaining 649 jobs and enhancing production capacity is not only a win for SSAB but also for the economic vitality of our region."

Bramstedt said the company is "pleased to be a part of the community's growth."

The project is expected to begin in late 2025.
