A suspect is in custody after a slew of law enforcement agencies worked to recover the pace car and other electronics that were stolen from the South Alabama Speedway.
The vehicle was stolen from the race track in Kinston sometime between Monday and Wednesday last week. In addition to the pace car, the thief, or thieves, stole radios, headsets, and the storage box for the track’s security cameras, leaving no recording of the break-in.
On Tuesday, the speedway announced that multiple law enforcement agencies were able to locate the car and the other stolen goods intact.
“The pace car was found behind a residence off Hwy 189, just three miles from the track,” the South Alabama Speedway said on social media. “When law enforcement arrived, the suspects fled on foot. The Coffee County K-9 Unit initiated the search, and the Covington County K-9 Unit tracked the male suspect over 4.5 miles, locating him near Hwy 52, just down the road from the race track.”
It continued, “We’re happy to report that everything stolen appears to still be in the pace car. This outcome wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and collaboration of all the agencies involved.”
Thus far, it appears that only one suspect was arrested.
The track thanked several law enforcement agencies for assisting in tracking down the stolen goods and making an arrest, including the Kinston Police Department, Opp Police Department, Coffee County Sheriff's Office, Covington County Sheriff's Office, Covington County Reserves K-9 Unit, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Alabama Game & Fish and Florala Police Department.
