At least two lives were lost early Wednesday morning due to a tornado that hit the Flatwood area near Montgomery.

The deaths occurred when the tornado caused a tree to fall on a home. The Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency told Yahoo News that others were injured and search-and-rescue crews checked houses in the area Wednesday morning. A local church was opened up to shelter affected residents.

Several storms began in the South on Tuesday evening and carried on throughout the night, beginning in Texas and moving east.

Weather officials in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana issued at least 36 tornado reports since then.

According to the National Weather Service, several tornado reports were issued throughout the western and southern parts of the state.

Reports indicated that several buildings were damaged overnight, including an apartment complex in Eutaw which lost a roof. Buildings were said to be damaged in Elmore and Hale Counties as well.
