In a recent proclamation, Gov. Kay Ivey declared June “Strong Families Month” in Alabama, highlighting the importance of homes "led by a father and mother."

The proclamation highlights the significance of a father's and a mother’s roles in raising children and building strong families, and underscores the impact these households have on society.

“Strong families build a strong Alabama,” Ivey said. “Homes led by stable parents, a father and a mother, provide children with the structure and discipline necessary to succeed. In Alabama, we celebrate these hardworking parents that strive for an even better future for their children.”

Ivey said the proclamation is in coordination with Father’s Day on June 21, recognizing Strong Families Month and fathers’ “lasting impact on the lives of Alabama children and families.”

“[F]athers are the head of the household,” the proclamation reads. “They play an essential role in the development of children by providing leadership, protection and support that help shape strong families and stronger communities. It is fitting that we celebrate Strong Families Month in coordination with Father’s Day in June, recognizing the lasting impact fathers have on the lives of Alabama children and families.”

It continues, “[C]hildren benefit from the presence of engaged parents who help guide their academic and moral development. Research continues to show children raised in stable family environments are more likely to graduate from high school, avoid substance abuse and achieve economic stability as adults.”

Ivey’s announcement also highlighted efforts by her administration and the legislature to expand school choice in the state, touting initiative partnerships with President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

“Alabama has demonstrated support for families by expanding educational choice and early childhood learning opportunities, while also achieving significant and measurable improvements to its child welfare system, and partnering with First Lady Melania Trump, and promoting the Trump administration’s ‘A home for every child’ initiative,” The proclamation concludes.
