LIVINGSTON The Sumter County Commission approved an extension of a 1% sales and use tax for the Sumter County Board of Education.

Alabama state law allows county governments to levy a sales and use tax equivalent to the state rate for public schools.

Superintendent Dr. Marcy Burroughs attended the commission meeting and requested the extension.

“This request seeks to extend the current tax structure for an additional 10 years, covering a period of July 1, 2025, to July 31, 2035,” Burroughs presented. “So, this extension includes both the 1% sales tax and use tax and the 1-4% sales tax that was applied to automobiles, vehicles, truck trailers, semi-trailers, and houses that is to be used for maintenance, utilities and supplies. So, we are requesting just a 10-year extension on this sales tax.”

The commission unanimously approved the extension.

Sumter County Schools is under the control of the Alabama State Board of Education. The State took over the school system in 2023, citing personnel and financial issues.
