Huntsville Police are investigating after a double stabbing in a home on Mountain Gap Road on Thursday.

Investigators said two people were stabbed by their roommate, Lester Cruz, after a verbal altercation. One of the victims, 40-year-old Zennella Pena-Sandoval, died on the scene. A second victim was taken to the hospital with injuries. That victim has not been identified, but police believe that person is expected to survive.

“South Precinct Officers apprehended Cruz walking away from the scene minutes after the incident occurred,” police stated in a press release. “He was taken into custody without incident.”

Cruz, 27, is charged with murder and aggravated assault. He is being held in the Madison County Jail with no bond and has been placed on a hold for U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Cruz was also arrested on New Year’s Day for being in possession of methamphetamine but was given a $2,500 bond and was released. Prosecutors are now asking for that bond to be revoked. The judge set a revocation hearing for February 2.
