The woman prosecutors believe sped through a red light, causing a deadly crash last September, has been indicted for murder.
The crash happened at the intersection of Airport Boulevard and McGregor Avenue. A truck barreled through the intersection as an SUV attempted to cross. The SUV was hit, and the driver was pronounced dead on the scene.
Spencer Strickland refused a breathalyzer at the scene, but police said she smelled of alcohol, and a cup was found in her car.
Former Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association (MAMGA) queen Katherine Ashley Smith was killed in the crash.
Smith was the MAMGA queen in 2017, and the association has since dedicated a 5K race to her in honor of her memory.
“Katherine's presence in this world was truly special, and her legacy will continue to shine bright in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her,” her family stated. “Her kindness, grace, and strength have left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with her.”
Smith was 38 years old.
Strickland was charged with reckless manslaughter, but after a grand jury heard the case, the charge was upgraded to murder.
