The Athens Police Department made an arrest in connection to the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl after tracing the suspect all the way to New York State.

Oscar Ariel Duarte Rodriguez, 36, is charged with first-degree rape.

On May 9, the Athens Police Department said they received a report of a girl who was sexually assaulted. Detectives learned Rodriguez had fled to Putman County, New York. Detective Melissa Meadows then contacted Puman County, where he was later captured.

Rodriguez has been extradited back to Alabama and was placed in the Limestone County Jail with no bond.

He will have an Aniah’s Law hearing, according to police.
