In Tarrant, heated campaigns will continue for the mayor and four council seats after voters were split on Tuesday.
Nearly 6,000 people live in Tarrant, but less than 700 showed up to cast a ballot.
For mayor, none of the three candidates received 50% of the votes or more to secure the spot. Incumbent Mayor Wayman Newton received 42.1% of the votes, challenger Tracie Threadford received 48.4%, and challenger Jack Evans received 9.5%. Newton and Threadford will go head-to-head in a runoff.
Councilman Tommy Bryant was the only elected official who got away from the municipal elections without having to go into a runoff. He had 50% of the votes, over Allen Pilkington’s 49%.
In one council race, all three candidates received the same number of votes. Bruce Cooper, Clara Palmore and Rodkeisha Ragland will all go into a runoff for the District 2 seat.
Other runoffs will be between Charles Johnson and Veronica Freeman for District 1; Valarie McClellan and Catherine Anderson for District 3; and Deborah Matthews and Donald Little for District 4.
Runoff elections will be held on September 23.
