Tarrant Mayor Wayman Newton is attempting for the third time to remove Police Chief Wendell Major.

Newton introduced a resolution to remove Major at the May 6 council meeting but didn't get a second motion. The same scenario played out at the council's next meeting on May 20, but with a new proposed ordinance to create a new police department was introduced.

When Newton asked questions about the ordinance, he was met with complete silence. He asked questions such as what they would do with the existing police department and officers and how they would ensure the officers were certified.

He told 1819 News that he expected the same treatment at the June 3 meeting. He said he doesn't think his resolution will get a second motion despite concerns he has brought before the council.

"Given the findings of the recent investigation report, which confirm that Chief Wendell  Major engaged in conduct unbecoming of a Chief of Police, it's my duty to bring this resolution back onto the agenda for a third time," Newton said. "It is imperative that we address these serious concerns with transparency and uphold the integrity of our police department."

Newton previously put Major on administrative leave due to a disagreement the two had concerning the release of a domestic violence suspect without a court order, according to Major. Further, Major said Newton was experiencing a crisis. Newton denied that claim.

A special work session will discuss creating a new police department from scratch. The council's meetings are streamed live on Facebook.
