A 16-year-old was shot and killed in Birmingham Wednesday.

The Jefferson County Coroner confirmed that Jamie Monte Gibson, of Center Point, was shot at approximately 5:46 p.m. at the intersection of Overton Road and Liberty Parkway.

Officers from the South Precinct of the Birmingham Police Department (BPD) were dispatched around 6:15 p.m. and were met by officers from the Vestavia Police Department (VPD).

Gibson was carried to the hospital by Vestavia Fire and Rescue. He was pronounced dead at Grandview Medical Center less than 20 minutes later.

Witnesses told police they noticed a sedan driving up the I-459 exit and then heard gunshots. Police said Gibson was seen exiting the vehicle before he collapsed on the road.

According to WBRC, Gibson was a sophomore student at Huffman High School.

“We are saddened by the tragic loss of Jamie Monte Gibson, a 16-year-old Huffman High School sophomore,” Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan told WBRC. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Jamie’s family as well as the Huffman High School family. Additional counselors will be at Huffman today for the students and staff.”

This is the 42nd murder investigation in Birmingham in 2022.

The BPD said details are limited, and no one is in custody.
