The Birmingham Police Department arrested the mother of a boy found dead in the Extended Stay America on Cahaba Park Circle.

Aston Starkey, 13, of Birmingham, was discovered on March 2 and was transported to Grandview Hospital. The child was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

Birmingham PD and Shelby County Department of Human Resources (DHR) launched an investigation due to suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

When autopsy results came back on June 6, it was revealed that Starkey died of malnutrition and dehydration complicated by neglect.

The medical examiner’s office ruled the manner of death as homicide.

The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office issued a murder warrant against the victim’s mother, Serena Starkey, 43, of Birmingham. She had yet to be apprehended as of Wednesday evening.

Anyone with information on Starkey’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Birmingham PD’s Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764.
