On Friday, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) issued a warning regarding the state of college athletics and demanded change.

Tuberville noted that "over 4,000" college football players across the country had entered their names into the transfer portal, which opened a week ago. With name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals and the portal essentially turning college football into free agency every season, the former Auburn football coach called the current system "broken."

"College sports have been thrown into a tailspin. NIL deals and the transfer portal have gotten completely out of control. You know, over the first weekend of the football portal opening, over 4,000 student-athletes have put their names in the portal. This is beyond ridiculous. You know, I'm all for players making money, but we must make sure that they're also getting a good education, which is next to impossible when young men and women are transferring to a different school every season. The system is broken."

He continued, "I'm grateful for President Trump's leadership on this issue, but we still have more work to do. You know, it's long past time Congress steps up and creates nationwide standards before college sports are lost forever."
