On Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) joined "America's Newsroom" on Fox News Channel to discuss President Donald Trump's memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iranian leadership to extend an ongoing ceasefire by 60 days. While the agreement doesn't officially end the conflict, it does provide additional time for negotiation between the United States and Iran.
Britt specifically commented on Trump's newly expressed willingness to allow congressional review of the agreement.
"I certainly look forward to taking a look at this. I think the President said it, he'll send it over once he gets it," Britt said. "We've heard that what we're hearing in the media is not accurate, so it will be good to understand from him what are the parameters."
According to the legislator, recent military operations against Iran are "47 years too late."
"I am grateful for the President's leadership," she stated. "I'm grateful that he's actually holding Iran accountable. It will be good for us to know what those are, and particularly with regards to nuclear ambitions or lack thereof from Iran. We've heard from the President from the very beginning that he will not allow Iran to enrich uranium, that they will never be able to get a nuclear weapon."
Added Britt, "Seeing those details, being able to put those in front of Congress will be important, so we can be unified in making sure that we take down the greatest threat of terrorism across the globe, and that is Iran."
"The long-term goal of this is to have sustainability of peace in that region, because we know that's what's better for Americans, for the safety and security of our country, for the prosperity of the people here on our shores," explained Britt. "A stable Middle East and Iran without the ability to enrich nuclear capabilities is what's best for all of us. So, I think that they'll be looking hard at this. "
"There'll be a lot of questions, but I know that President Trump is the best deal maker that there is on the planet," she added.
Trump and Vice President JD Vance have now both electronically signed the framework agreement with Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghaliba.
The MOU will likely be signed by both Vance and Ghalibaf on Friday in Switzerland.
