U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) announced on Tuesday he’ll be running to be Alabama’s next governor in 2026 instead of seeking re-election to the U.S. Senate.
Tuberville said during an interview on Fox News Channel’s "The Will Cain Show" on Tuesday that Alabama was home.
He said he planned to finish out his term in the Senate backing Trump’s policies while campaigning for governor of Alabama.
“I will be the future governor of the great state of Alabama,” Tuberville said in the interview.
“I’m doing this to help this country and the great state of Alabama. We’re going to grow Alabama. We’re going to bring manufacturing to this state. We’re going to stop illegal immigration," he added.
Tuberville was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2020. His decision also sets up an open Senate seat that will likely be heavily contested.
He led the Auburn Tigers to five Western Division titles and one SEC Championship, and he was named the 2004 National Coach of the Year. Tuberville also had head coaching stops at Texas Tech and Cincinnati. After the 2016 season, Tuberville retired as one of the top 50 most winning football coaches of all time.
Governor Kay Ivey is term-limited from seeking re-election.
