The best football coach in UAB history walked away in June because of back problems. The announcement, as well as the timing of the announcement, was shocking for folks throughout the UAB community. He had spinal fusion surgery not long after the announcement. Former offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent took over as the interim head coach and finished 7-6 after leading the team to a win in the Bahamas Bowl.
*Trent Dilfer becomes the seventh head football coach in UAB history.
The former Super Bowl-winning quarterback, who spent the past four seasons building Lipscomb Academy in Nashville into one of the top high school programs in the country, hit the ground running.
*Andy Kennedy leads UAB back to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2015.
*Jelly Walker becomes a household name in college basketball.
The dynamic Walker established himself as one of the top playmakers in the country last season and is currently the country’s leading scorer. While he’s done that three points at a time, he is also one of the top assist guys in Conference USA and the catalyst for a team that has hopes of getting back to the NCAA Tournament.
*DeWayne McBride has one of the most prolific seasons in UAB football history.
*Erica Demers leads the women’s soccer team on a school-record 10-game unbeaten streak.
