On Thursday, trading card company Topps announced it had created a commemorative card for Birmingham-Southern College's (BSC) baseball team, which is vying for the Division III national championship at the same time the school is permanently closing.
According to Topps, a portion of the proceeds from card sales will go towards the baseball program. The company will also provide cards to members of the team to distribute to friends and family.
"Despite the college PERMANENTLY CLOSING, their baseball team has made the NCAA College World Series," Topps wrote on Twitter. "A portion of the proceeds from these cards will be given to the baseball program…(and we’re also giving some cards to the team to distribute to players, friends & family!) Congrats, [BSC] on the historic Cinderella run."
The card is part of the Topps Now series, which, according to the Topps website, "celebrates the greatest moments... as they happen!" It can be purchased here for $8.95.
A GoFundMe was also created for BSC to pay for travel and championship rings. The fundraiser eclipsed its goal of $100,000 in just four days.
The Panthers square off against Salve Regina on Friday at 3:45 p.m.
A live stream of the game is available here.
