The fire chief of the Town Creek volunteer fire department in Walker County is recovering after surgery and a mild stroke.

A severe infection left Chief Chris Owens hospitalized. Doctors had to remove part of his foot and his big toe to save his life.

The surgery was successful, but his recovery will include physical and occupational therapies. His family said the stroke affected the left side of his body.

After 20 years of service, the fire department is asking the community to come together in prayer.

"Our fire chief is still in the hospital recovering from a terrible infection in his foot and recovering from a mild stroke," the fire department stated. "This man would help anyone in any way he could. Please help his family during this difficult time."

The family is also struggling to pay medical bills due to the loss of income.

The community has held prayer vigils and is raising money through a GoFundMe account.
