Traffic was stopped for hours Tuesday evening after a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 59/20, west of Birmingham.

The crash involved an overturned Waste Management truck and multiple other vehicles, including a semi-truck.

Kyle Smith, of Coker, was on his way home from his mother's home in Piedmont when he realized he was about to be delayed for quite some time. Smith said it took him six hours to travel six miles, and he almost ran out of gas.

"I had lawnmower gas in the truck for my lawnmower, so I had to put gas in the truck," Smith told 1819 News. "I'm glad I had it."

Smith said he was among hundreds of cars stranded for hours. He saw many people attempting to turn around, but since he was pulling a trailer, that was not an option for him.

"I can't do that with a 14-foot trailer and a lawnmower," he said. "So, I'm just here waiting patiently. And I'm not a patient person."

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) State Troopers and local agencies responded to the scene.
