The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) released details about a chase on Interstate 10 in Baldwin County that led to two serious crashes and major traffic jams in Daphne.
The crash occurred around 2:20 p.m. Monday after an ALEA trooper observed a 2024 Chevrolet SUV failing to maintain its lane of travel. When the Trooper attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver refused to stop.
The trooper followed the SUV onto Alabama 181, where the SUV collided head-on with a 2019 Toyota Rav4. The Rav4 then struck a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. The pursued SUV continued and struck an ALEA vehicle and a 2016 Ford F-150, then left the scene.
The SUV re-entered Interstate 10, where it collided head-on with a 2020 Ford F-150. The SUV then left the roadway and struck a concrete barrier near exit 38 before becoming engulfed in flames.
At least three innocent drivers were injured and transported to hospitals for treatment.
The driver of the SUV, Ruben Levi Costa, 42, of Niceville, Fla., was injured and transported to USA Hospital for treatment. Upon his release, he was transported to the Baldwin County Jail, where he was charged with attempting to elude, first-degree DUI, assault and three counts of leaving the scene of an accident. He was also issued traffic citations.
