The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) and other local law enforcement agencies are partnering this week to add more driver license checkpoints and speed checks.
ALEA Troopers will conduct high-visibility enforcement detail through Sunday, especially in high-crash areas and busy corridors.
“Effective coordination among law enforcement agencies is crucial for the safety of citizens and visitors across all of our communities,” said ALEA secretary Hal Taylor. “We work with our local partners throughout the year, every year, however, these efforts are especially important during high-traffic periods such as the Thanksgiving holiday. We are thankful for all local law enforcement agencies as our shared goal is to reduce tragedies and save lives.”
“The Thanksgiving holiday marks the beginning of a cherished time of year,” ALEA Department of Public Safety director, Colonel Jonathan Archer agreed and said. “Tragically, many Alabama families experience loss due to preventable motor vehicle accidents caused by impaired driving, speeding, and failure to wear seat belts.”
During the 2022 Thanksgiving travel period, there were 326 traffic fatalities in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Nearly 50% of those killed were not wearing seat belts.
“No matter how long or short your drive, it’s critical that drivers and passengers Buckle Up,” Archer added. “Every Trip. Every Time. We want everyone to have a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Please, make sure everyone in your vehicle is buckled before you ever turn on the car — and that includes children being in the correct car seats, too.”
