Trump calls for 'one powerful' spending bill; Tuberville first senator to support combining tax reform, border security

President-elect Donald Trump is pushing for a major spending package to be one of the first bills to hit his desk when he takes office in 14 days.

Instead of splitting the reconciliation package into two bills to tackle tax cuts and border security separately, Trump recently called on Congress to draft "one powerful bill," an idea U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) first suggested earlier last December.

"I've heard you say let's put them both into one. I'm all for it," Tuberville said in December on FOX Business Network's "Kudlow." "I'm all for it, but we have to do tax reform. I keep hearing we need to do the border first. I'm fine with that, but we better get tax reform done early. We got to get this country growing again… All the growth plans that President Trump has had in there, we got to get it put in. We got to do it early. We can get it all done, but President Trump is going to have to come in and get the Senate on board, know that he can count on them, and then work with the House to get that done. I think we can do that, but we got to push it hard."

Fox News' Jacqui Heinrich reported Saturday that after speaking with various proponents of the plan and given Republicans' slim majority in the House, Trump believed the one-bill reconciliation plan was the best, quickest option to jump-start his agenda.

"Members of Congress are getting to work on one powerful Bill that will bring our Country back, and make it greater than ever before," Trump posted on X. "We must Secure our Border, Unleash American Energy, and Renew the Trump Tax Cuts, which were the largest in History, but we will make it even better - NO TAX ON TIPS. IT WILL ALL BE MADE UP WITH TARIFFS, AND MUCH MORE, FROM COUNTRIES THAT HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE U.S. FOR YEARS. Republicans must unite, and quickly deliver these Historic Victories for the American People. Get smart, tough, and send the Bill to my desk to sign as soon as possible. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
