U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) was swift to applaud President Donald Trump's ongoing tariff strategy as markets show improvements in inflation, as well as food and car prices.

While Trump himself has admitted potential supply shortages and higher prices due to his tariff policy, he and his supporters continue to downplay the market hits as inevitable growing pains for reorienting the nation's domestic production.

Trump has paused some tariffs and issued executive orders exempting certain car parts for automakers, while many continue to criticize the policies as harmful to the economy.

Earlier this month, the Commerce Department announced that the Nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) registered at -0.3% for the first quarter of the year. The announcement preceded a marked dip in the markets, leading to Trump critics to cry impending doom.

Recently, it was announced that inflation had reached its lowest point in four years, which brought praise from Trump supporters and crickets from detractors. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also recently announced lower prices for items such as eggs, clothing, and cars.

On Thursday, Tuberville told reporters that the improved economic numbers should prove that Trump knows what he's doing and critics should butt out.

"It's going to be hard to convince the mainstream media, and the Democrats, to buy into anything President Trump, even though he is probably as sharp as anyone when it comes to, number one, negotiating," he outlined. "He's been talking about tariffs for the last 30 years, about how unfair this has been. He understands our tax system, where our taxpayers of this country cannot continue to send up $4.9 trillion a year and us spend $7 trillion. The debt is going to overrun us. He knows more about economics than all these Democrats put together, because if they had an idea, we would not be in this shape. What they've been doing is definitely wrong, so we got to pay down our debt. How do we do that? We do it with tariffs. We can't do it with taxes. He wants to drop taxes."

Tuberville continued, "He wants to raise tariffs and understanding that that will bring manufacturing back to this country. There's not a day goes by that we don't get a call here in my office from a company overseas that wants to bring their manufacturing to the United States, and a lot of them to the state of Alabama. He's doing exactly what he needs to do. We need to prepare for that by workforce development, doing all those things on the side. But President Trump is a genius when it comes to negotiating and understanding tariffs. He understands China. We have a $300 billion deficit each year from China, of how they cheat us on tariffs. Enough's enough, and it's time for us, the American citizen and taxpayer to take back our country, take back our economy and President Trump is trying to do that, and that's reason he's over negotiating deals right now overseas getting manufacturing from the UAE, from all the Middle East, from anywhere in Asia to come back here and start manufacturing to where our people have jobs, good jobs and we can build back our economy through that direction and also through tariffs."
