With President Donald Trump's publicly good relationship with Alabama's members of Congress and frequent trips to the state, you might have expected him to have sampled the state's prized culinary creation, but you would be wrong.
Alabama is known for a few things: Its world-class football—and now basketball—programs, space exploration, Civil Rights history, that Lynard Skynard song, and much more. However, for those who call Alabama home, Conecuh Sausage stands alone as possibly the greatest contribution this state has made to the human race.
Grill it, fry it, boil it, bake it, throw it between a bun, put it in spaghetti sauce, add it to a pizza, dip it in batter and fry it, no matter your method of preparation, Conecuh Sausage never disappoints.
The Sessions family began selling their smoked pork sausage in 1947 in Conecuh County, in the small town of Evergreen. Since then, it has been a staple at barbecues, tailgates, parties, and just about any other food-serving event.
While the company still uses its original recipe from the previous century, the products have expanded to multiple flavors, which are equally popular, and even smoked turkey, ham, hot dogs, bacon and merch. All the while, the company boasts of no MSG or added nitrates in its recipe.
President Trump's love for food is well known. His penchant for fast food and other tasty morsels has officially become an internet meme. Trump's good relationships with Alabama's federal lawmakers are even more well-known.
Trump has frequently praised and appeared alongside figures like U.S. Sens. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) and Katie Britt (R-Montgomery), U.S. Reps. Dale Strong (R-Monrovia), Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville), Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) and others.
Most recently, Trump appeared at the University of Alabama's (UA) graduation commencement ceremony earlier this month. Before that, he attended the Alabama versus Georgia football game in September 2024. He also attended the Alabama versus LSU game in 2019.
Despite the President's frequent chaperoned trips to the state, and in a context where a Conecuh dog would have certainly been served, it's still unclear if Trump has ever sampled the state's favorite entrée.
1819 News asked every member of the state's federal Republican delegation if they had taken it on themselves to give Trump the ultimate gift. Those who responded confessed to being unsure if Trump had ever tried Conecuh Sausage.
While it's possible Trump has enjoyed the pork-stuffed delight, Alabama's leaders have clearly not made it a priority.
Aderholt responded to 1819 News with a tongue-in-cheek statement, passing the responsibility on to Moore, whose district included Conecuh County. He also pledged to deliver to Trump the "Pride of Alabama," Golden Eagle Syrup, which has been manufactured in Fayette since 1944.
"We will let Congressman Moore handle that since it's his territory," Aderholt said. "And of course support him 100%. But we want to get some Eagle Brand Syrup from Fayette in front of him [Trump]."
Moore, likewise, accepted the responsibility for his district's beloved pork-stuffed delight, assuring that Trump would try and love the delicacy before too long.
"My wife, Heather, loads a suitcase full of Conecuh to bring to DC with us to make sure we always have a piece of Alabama when we are in Washington," Moore said. "We love Conecuh Sausage and are excited they have decided to move their plant to the First Congressional District. I don't know for sure if the President has had Conecuh, but I know when we get Conecuh in front of President Trump, he will love it just like so many Alabamians."
