In a call with reporters on Thursday, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) expressed full support for President Donald Trump's recent decision to classify Antifa, a militant left-wing political group, as a "major terrorist organization" following the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

The move from Trump followed a swift investigation into the killing of the late conservative activist, finding that the alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson, 22, had connections with numerous far-left groups capable of perpetrating such violence, including Antifa. The group, with members scattered across the globe, often resorts to acts of violence and destruction to achieve its goals, particularly against conservatives.

"I think it's necessary that we all label somebody for what they are. And, Antifa is exactly that, a terrorist organization," said Tuberville. "What is a terrorist organization? Somebody who hates this country wants to tear it down and wants to take it over under their rules and regulations, not the Constitution."

The lawmaker pointed out that the group is funded with hundreds of millions of dollars from sources worldwide, and many members are paid to be full-time activists and protesters.

"Also, it's supported by people within this country and outside of our country," Tuberville continued. "I think President Trump is exactly right. We need to take our country back and not allow people like Antifa to try to destroy our cities, our neighborhoods and make everybody uncomfortable when it comes to being able to do something freely, whether it's in their community or cities or towns."

Trump announced news of the reclassification on Truth Social.

"I am pleased to inform our many U.S.A patriots that I am designating ANTIFA, A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER, AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION," the President wrote. "I will also be strongly recommending that those funding ANTIFA be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices."
