U.S. Sens. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) and Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) both received new committee assignments as the 119th Congress prepares to kick off with a Trump administration and Republican majorities in both houses.
Both Tuberville and Britt were vocal in their support for President-elect Donald Trump before his election in November. With Republicans now holding the White House and majorities in the Senate and House of Representatives, both have expressed eagerness to get to work in the new administration.
Tuberville will continue serving on the Armed Services Committee, Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee, Veterans Affairs Committee and Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
Starting in the 119th Congress, Tuberville will also serve on the Senate Committee on Aging. The Aging Committee focuses on policies that affect older Americans. It also publishes educational materials to assist older adults and operates a toll-free fraud hotline to support families victimized by con artists and track national trends.
Britt recently received an appointment to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which evaluates all judicial nominations for the federal judiciary, including the Supreme Court, and has broad jurisdiction over immigration, Constitutional issues and other legislative areas.
Britt is also slated to remain on the Senate Appropriations, Banking and Rules committees going forward.
The judiciary committee is expected to hold hearings for Trump’s cabinet picks, including Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi and FBI director nominee Kash Patel.
“I am proud my Republican colleagues selected me to serve on the Senate Judiciary Committee and am honored to have the opportunity to serve under the leadership of incoming Chairman Chuck Grassley,” Britt said. “I will work tirelessly to bring Alabama’s conservative values to the forefront of the committee’s decisions, especially when evaluating nominees for the federal judiciary and safeguarding the God-given rights and individual liberties protected by the U.S. Constitution. As an attorney, I am committed to ensuring America’s judicial system is run by those who interpret the law, rather than leftwing activist judges seeking to legislate from the bench. I am also looking forward to utilizing my role on the Judiciary Committee to work alongside President Trump to end the border crisis and strengthen immigration enforcement across our nation’s interior. Together, we will make America safe again for hardworking families.”
