Although admitting it was "unfortunate," U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) on Wednesday downplayed The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg's inclusion in a Trump administration Signal group chat on military strikes against the Houthis.
According to Tuberville, President Donald Trump and his team will figure out how the journalist was added to a group chat with sensitive details about U.S. military strikes in Yemen. Tuberville echoed the White House, saying no classified material was mistakenly shared with Goldberg.
"The Secretary of Defense decides what's classified or not, and as he said, this wasn't classified. It wasn't war plans. It was a destination of which to do something, which as President Trump said, was very, very successful," Tuberville explained.
"Unfortunately, up here, that's all you get asked. Nobody is really asking about the $37 trillion we're in debt or all the problems we're having at our universities and all those things, but I am confident the administration will get to the bottom of what happened with the reporter being mistakenly added to the group chat," he continued. "Now, I don't know how that happens — we're all particular about who we send texts to — but unfortunately, it did happen. The president wants to do whatever he can to get this corrected. The administration has repeatedly said that zero classified information was sent on that thread, so we've got to believe in our president. He was elected. He's running the country. I'm sure there's going to be talk about not the material that was on there but also what will be talked about was group chats, which, as we see, can get out of hand in the blink of an eye."
Alabama's senior U.S. Senator added that Americans should be "grateful" they have Trump in office rather than the previous administration, which he said "almost brought us to the brink of World War III."
"It's unfortunate this happened, but we're going to get on with life," Tuberville emphasized.
He later called out Democrats for focusing on the group chat rather than Trump's success with tariffs.
"What happened with that Signal group chat ... obviously the reporter should've never been on there, but at the end of the day, that's over with," Tuberville said. "We need to get back to saving our country through the tariffs.
"Tariffs are the only thing that are going to save our country," he continued. "We have to get manufacturing back in our country and build it in America. Put people back to work. if we dont do that, we're going to lose this country."
