U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) recently joined U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) in cosponsoring the Unlocking Benefits for Independent Workers Act, which establishes a safe harbor under federal law for companies that would like to provide employee benefits voluntarily.
The bill would apply to contract workers any benefits or protections commonly provided to full-time employees, such as retirement and healthcare benefits.
“Our labor laws are in desperate need of modernizing,” Tuberville said. “Our independent contract workers shouldn’t be barred from accessing their hard-earned health care and retirement benefits. The workforce is ever evolving in President Trump’s America First economy, and our bill takes great strides to make sure American workers are protected.”
