While critics of President Donald Trump's tariff strategy to fix the economy and re-shore American business argue it could spark a trade war and lead to higher costs at home, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) said recently that it is the last, best hope of saving the country.

"President Trump walked into a hornet's nest. And I know people are complaining about these tariffs right now, but ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you something, this is the only shot we got at getting our country back," Coach said Sunday on "Cats Roundtable" with John Catsimatidis.

Trump has issued a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico and an extra 10% on China. While he's since adjusted the tariffs to exclude automotive parts, Trump has threatened more tariffs on these and other countries if necessary.

Tuberville said it was vital to restore America's manufacturing base and use the tariffs to pay down the national debt.

"We can't raise taxes on the American people. We're 37 trillion in debt. We've got to get manufacturing back to this country," he said. "We have 10 million open jobs that need to be filled. And we need more workers. People get off their butts, get away from welfare, get away from food stamps. These young kids that are sitting at home not doing anything, time to go to work, or we're going to lose our country. So manufacturing back in the country, start cutting our debt with these tariffs, we've got a chance. Anything else is not going to work, and this country is going to be... It'll be the United States of America, but it'll be totally different, John, than what you and I grew up in. So keep your fingers crossed with President Trump. He's trying hard."
