While the reactions to President Donald Trump’s tariff policy has been mixed, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) continues to back the president as he champions bringing more of the country’s production back to U.S. shores.
While Trump himself has admitted potential supply shortages and higher prices as a result of his tariff policy, he and his supporters continue to downplay the market hits as inevitable growing pains for reorienting the nation’s domestic production.
While Trump has placed pauses on some tariffs and issued executive orders exempting certain car parts for automakers, many continue to criticize the policies as harmful to the economy.
The Commerce Department announced this week that the Nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) registered at -0.3% for the first quarter of the year. The announcement preceded a marked dip in the markets.
On Wednesday, Tuberville stood by the tariff policy, saying it would lead to a “manufacturing renaissance” in the United States.
“In implementing tariffs as a negotiating tool, they are working," Tuberville outlined during a call with the media. "And we are already seeing the result of these tariffs, including in Alabama, a lot of manufacturing.”
He continued, “These investments are going to bring even more good-paying jobs to Alabama, and bolster our country’s role in making manufacturing American again.”
In response to the slight dip in GDP, Tuberville claimed the market reaction was expected and a part of the broader plan to improve the nation’s manufacturing capabilities.
“We all knew there was going to be a little pain with what’s going on with Trump’s tariffs,” Tuberville stated. “I don’t think they’ve really kicked in, but, at the end of the day, I just met with a group from Alabama that is really fired up about the tariffs because their manufacturing plant is growing. It’s building. It’s blocking Chinese imports, which it needs to do. They are absolutely dumping in the United States of America everything they possible can from China and some of these other countries.”
“But the thing that we need to understand is, the entire Biden administration, every year for four years, we were almost or in a recession. The mainstream media forgot what a recession is; it means that for so many months, the GDP drops below 3%. But, at the end of the day, we can’t look at that. We’ve got to look at the growth. We’ve got to look at what’s happening. We’ve got to look at the positive attitude. Things are going to get better; they’re going to get a lot better. And always remember this: what we were doing before this wasn’t working," he added.
