U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) recently came out in staunch opposition to Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough for blocking specific provisions in President Donald Trump's so-called One Big Beautiful Bill.
MacDonough's rulings struck at several key points in the spending package, including a crackdown on certain taxes that states used to fund their Medicaid programs, and measures meant to exclude illegal aliens from public benefits.
The Senate Parliamentarian is an unelected position that serves at the pleasure of the Senate Majority Leader. The position is meant to uphold the Senate's rules and parliamentary procedures. MacDonough has held the position since Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid appointed her in 2012. Former Alabama Senator Richard Shelby praised MacDonough in her confirmation hearings.
Despite significant pushback from GOP lawmakers, many of whom called for MacDonough's removal, Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) stated the Senate would not move to overrule her rulings.
On a Thursday call with Reporters, Tuberville joined the chorus calling for McDonough to be fired.
"The woke, radical left Senate parliamentarian today, who was appointed by Harry Reid [and] was an advisor to Al Gore, just struck down a provision banning illegals from getting Medicaid," Tuberville said. "Yeah. You heard that right. An [un]elected bureaucrat thinks that she knows better than every single elected member of Congress. She also ruled that illegal immigrants should be eligible for federal student loans. Clearly, she is siding with the illegal immigrants over the American taxpayers and American people."
"You know, the parliamentarian also struck down another provision that would have protected taxpayers from paying for so-called gender-affirming care for minors who are on Medicaid. The Supreme Court, by the way, just ruled on this last week. Zero taxpayer dollars should go towards paying for gender mutilation for minors. It's sick and it's wrong. But apparently, the unelected parliamentarian thinks she knows better. This is a perfect example of why Americans hate the swamp. The parliamentarian's job is not to push a woke agenda. In case she forgot, President Trump won a landslide election seven months ago. He received a mandate from the American people, and the one big beautiful bill delivers on that mandate; she should be fired today."
