After talks of a restructured FBI in the upcoming Trump administration, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) recently hinted at the possibility of the agency’s permanent home being at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville.
For years, the federal government has worked to relocate the permanent FBI headquarters out of the aging facility in downtown Washington, D.C. Last year, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced the new site would be in Maryland.
The decision swiftly launched an investigation into the process by which it was made under accusations of politicization of the process, which was lauded by many Virginia lawmakers who believe their state should host the agency.
With President-elect Donald Trump's incoming administration, which includes a very controversial pick to head the FBI in Kash Patel, the agency’s final location remains in the air.
In a call with reporters, Tuberville suggested that Huntsville was in the mix since the FBI already has a presence at Redstone Arsenal.
“There might be some more people coming from Washington D.C. to the Huntsville area,” Tuberville said. “You know, we’re looking for a permanent place for all of the FBI; there’s no better place than Huntsville. The Biden administration has chosen Maryland for the location of the FBI, but that’s not all set in stone. So, we’ll see.”
“We’re in great shape in Huntsville behind the wall at Redstone Arsenal with the FBI," he added. "We’re still continuing to build. We've got a lot more work to do there. We've got more people that will move in. But wouldn’t it be great to have the entire FBI agency in Huntsville, Alabama? It would be perfect.”
