In a press call with reporters on Thursday, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) announced that he has united with a group of fellow Republican legislators to introduce a bill aimed at making the streets of Washington, D.C., a safer place.
The CLEAN D.C. Act, if passed, will repeal the D.C. City Council's controversial Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act of 2022, which imposed restrictions on law enforcement in Washington, D.C.
"This week, I'm joining my colleagues in introducing legislation backing President Trump's efforts to make D.C. and America safe again," said Tuberville. "Washington, D.C. is the capital of the free world and is supposed to be a place where Americans can visit and feel safe. I want Alabamians to feel safe when they come to my office or visit the monuments with their families."
The senator noted the consistently high crime rate in the city prior to the deployment of the National Guard to restore order.
"D.C. is a national treasure, and America is a beacon of freedom to the rest of the world. Our capital city should reflect that," he continued. "As of three weeks ago, D.C. had a higher murder rate than Bogota, Colombia. And the number of carjackings had more than tripled. You couldn't even leave your house without looking over your shoulder. Over the past few years, woke D.C. Leadership has done more for drug dealers, gang members and illegals than they have for American citizens who live and visit the Capitol."
Tuberville offered an example of the flawed enforcement of laws in Washington, D.C., and credited Trump with putting corrupt liberal politicians' on notice' by bringing in the military.
"Yesterday, I heard the story of a woman who was violently assaulted in D.C. by a deranged criminal who had already been arrested five times for similar violent offenses. And each time this sick individual was let out of D.C. jail, the very next day. It's embarrassing. Other countries are absolutely laughing at us. Thanks to President Trump, law and order are back. He's putting the criminals and corrupt politicians on notice by bringing out the National Guard."
Tuberville issued a warning to Democrats in municipal government across the country.
"What President Trump is doing in D.C. should serve as an example to every crime-infested city in the country," he stated. "I said this before, the Cavalry's coming to every soft-on-crime mayor and city council member. Love it or leave it. We are a nation of law and order. Don't like it, move to Europe."
According to Tuberville, authorities have already made almost 2,000 arrests in the capital city since the crackdown began, including 16 gang members with ties to organizations like MS-13.
U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) has also signed onto the CLEAN D.C. Act. The legislation is endorsed by the D.C. Police Union and the Fraternal Order of Police.
"In 2023, one of my staffers was carjacked and held at gunpoint, just one mile from our nation's Capitol building. D.C.'s crime rate is higher than the national average and even higher than that of many capital cities in third-world countries," Britt stated. "To put it simply, anyone who says D.C. doesn't have a crime problem isn't facing the facts."
"I'm proud to join Senator Cruz and my Republican colleagues in cosponsoring the CLEAN D.C. Act, which builds on President Trump's historic action to make D.C. beautiful and safe again by reversing the liberal D.C. City Council's reckless 2022 law that lessens penalties for violent crimes," she added.
