U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) weighed in on the ongoing gambling issue in Alabama, saying Wednesday that the people should decide.
Tuberville, who is mulling a gubernatorial bid rather than another term in the U.S. Senate, was asked if the Alabama Legislature should consider taking up sports betting.
Alabama's senior U.S. Senator said the issue should not be forced on the people, adding that state lawmakers should carefully consider how their constituents feel and go from there. He said the taxpayers would ultimately decide if they want gambling or not.
"I'm going to leave that to [the legislature]," Tuberville replied. "They've got all the information. What you have to do in a situation like this — you look at the people you represent, in each individual county or district or whatever. You look at the ramifications, how any type of gambling can help or hurt, how many people are against it or for it. There's no reason to force anything on anybody. It's just, at the end of the day ... I think the taxpayers in the state of Alabama will make a decision on that."
"So, again, let's look and see what happens, you know, with the legislature if they come up with any good ideas that can pass to where they think the Alabama taxpayer will look at it and vote for it, one way or the other," he added, noting he did not have a say on the issue.
