On a call with reporters Thursday morning, U.S Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) addressed the long-awaited political retirement of former Speaker of the House and U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Tuberville was asked for his opinion on the California liberal's legacy and exit from national politics.

"She didn't have much of a legacy that really stood up for America. She's been in it for herself and for the power," Tuberville said. "We can tell a lot of things up here that she has done over the years that have not been for the benefit of the United States of America. It's been for [her] party. It's all about politics."

The senator argued that the 85-year-old lawmaker was a prime example of why term limits should be implemented for legislators.

"She's been up here for a long time, way too long," Tuberville stated. "Really, we need term limits because you get stuck with these people up here that stay forever, and they get comfortable, and, you know, at the end of the day, sooner or later, you've got to retire."

"But this should have happened a long time ago. She should have been out, as a lot of people on both sides of the aisle should," he added.

President Donald Trump, a consistent critic and adversary of Pelosi, is celebrating the lawmaker's retirement announcement, calling it a "great thing for America."

Pelosi was first elected to Congress in 1987 and served as Speaker of the House twice. She was also one of the chief architects of the Affordable Care Act and the American Rescue Plan.
