U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) said he is "surprised" tonight's debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump is taking place.
After months of speculation about whether Biden would agree to debate Trump, the two presidential candidates announced last month they'd agreed to hold two debates.
Tuberville told WVTM 13 in Birmingham on Wednesday that he liked tonight's debate format but was surprised it was actually happening.
"Both of them are going to be… I'm not going to say nice to each other but they're going to respect each other. I think the way it's set up now where if President Biden is talking, President Trump can't speak over him. Let them say their peace, and if you want to argue with it when your time is up, argue. I think it's a good format. I'm surprised it's happening," Tuberville said.
The format includes muted microphones that will switch off when it's the opponent's turn to speak, no pre-written notes on stage, and no live studio audience.
Viewers can watch the debate on CNN on Thursday at 8 p.m. One other debate is scheduled for September 10 on ABC.
