U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) recently spoke about the Senate's upcoming work on President Donald Trump's highly prioritized budget package, expecting "a lot of changes" to address concerns over the raised debt ceiling and more.
With the Senate returning to Washington this week, the body's most significant priority is addressing Trump's so-called Big Beautiful Bill, which encompasses tax reforms, spending cuts, border security measures, defense spending and other policy priorities.
The bill received broad support from Republicans when it passed the House in May. However, it is not without its detractors in the GOP, who claim that the bill does not do enough to address wasteful spending and raise the debt ceiling.
In the upper chamber, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has expressed similar qualms with the debt ceiling raise. Other Senate Republicans have opposed the Medicaid cuts included in the legislation.
On Thursday, Tuberville told reporters that he anticipates significant changes to the package, citing tax cuts and reduced government spending as a priority.
"We're still debating the final text, and there will be a lot of changes to this version over the next few weeks," Tuberville said. "I'm absolutely sure about two things: we have to deliver tax cuts for hard-working Americans, number one. We don't want Americans to have to see an average of a 22% tax increase over the next few years, and that would happen. That would be the biggest tax hike in American history. But we also have to cut spending. That is a necessity. We are spending nearly $2 trillion and more than we bring in every year. If we keep doing that, we will go under. America will not exist the way we all know it. It's as simple as that. Now, the tax cuts are going to cost us some money, but in the long run, they will pay for themselves because they will create an economic boom as we've already seen since their enactment in 2017."
He continued, "Cutting taxes is a critical part of the puzzle. Additionally, we need to deliver on President Trump's campaign promise to remove taxes on tips and overtime wages. Americans work hard to support their families, and if they put in more than 40 hours a week, they should be able to keep every penny of that pay."
In addition to lawmakers criticizing the bill, Trump ally and DOGE founder Elon Musk has spent the days following his departure from federal government work slamming the bill as a means of continuing to sink the country further into debt through unsustainable spending.
"Since COVID, the Biden administration just ballooned our entitlements across almost every avenue," Tuberville explained. "We have over 2,600 agencies up here. We're over bloated. President Trump and DOGE is out there every day trying to cut back on the things we're doing. Elon Musk, he's been tweeting. He's very concerned about this bill. He understands the situation we're in, and basically says we have got to cut, and we do. The problem that Elon Musk looks at; I look at a different. Number one, the way to grow this country is to get the tax cuts done, and the tax cuts are in this bill, and we need to make them permanent."
He continued, "There's a lot of lipstick that we have to put on this pig, and there's a lot of things in there that are really, really good, and there's some things that are very questionable. So, that's what we will do for the next three weeks. But I'm supporting this bill. I want this thing to get across the goal line. We have to give the American taxpayers this bill in terms of the tax cuts."
