On his first day in office, President Donald Trump threatened to place a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico starting February 1. With that deadline a day away, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) said the president is still negotiating but also ready to make good on his threats.
"We hear he's negotiating, but he'll do it if he can't work what he needs to work out… He's going to slam them with probably a 25% tariff, Mexico and Canada," Tuberville said Thursday on FOX Business News' "Kudlow."
"There's a lot of things that we got to get going in the right direction from both countries, from our north and to our south. Tariffs are a huge way to get this country back going again and get people to listen to you, and that's what President Trump's doing," Tuberville said.
According to the BBC, Trump said while in his Oval Office Thursday that the tariffs were a response to illegal aliens and migrants flooding the border and trade deficits with the two countries.
Tuberville agreed that Mexico needs to do more to help secure the Southern border.
"They haven't done enough. They've been fighting back to some degree, Larry, but again President Trump knows how to get them to turn around," Tuberville said, referring to Mexico's new president as a "total communist."
"We've had huge problems with businesses in Alabama that's in Mexico that they're trying to take over. It's a disaster, but we have to have a better relationship with Mexico. They need us more than we need them, but President Trump, he'll work out that deal."
